LESSONS LEARNED

The stories our neighbors shared had several things in common.

Among the many lessons we learned, the biggest one is this: we live in a community that cares. People care about one another, and they care about preserving our beautiful region and country.

Key takeaways from Community Conversations

  • Deep listening works. Neighbors shared honest hopes and concerns when given a space to talk and be heard; and they yearn for people to listen to each other again.

  • Common ground exists. People from different backgrounds want the same basic things, like equal access to society’s resources, safe communities, and good health; as well as less tangible things, like freedom, respect, integrity, kindness, and civility.

  • Every voice matters. The project reached people who often stay quiet or get left out of big public meetings, but whose voices deserve to be heard.

  • Belonging is an essential human need. People need each other, and we thirst for that sense of belonging, acceptance, and connection.

  • Our inner strengths and community bonds help us survive hard times. People lean on deep personal and cultural anchors to stay strong and hopeful when the future is uncertain, especially family roots, traditional practices, personal faith and spirituality, mutual aid, and immersion in nature.

The storytellers called upon the strengths we already possess to address our problems. One of the often-mentioned strategies was this: if we care for the people, the wildlife, the land, and the water, it not only benefits us today, but it ensures a sustainable future for our children and grandchildren. Just plain common sense.
